Kristy and the Snobs

 Book #11, Graphix #10, Netflix S2 E1

Original Book - Writer: Ann M.Martin

Graphix Book - Illustrator: Chan Chau

Netflix Series - Director:  Robert Luketic, Writer: Rachel Shukert

Basic plot

Kristy has trouble adjusting to her new rich neighbourhood and she thinks her neighbours are snobs. An additional adjustment is the Thomas's family dog Louie, got sick and had to be put down. Her and David Michael are missing Louie a lot.

Things that are kept the same

  • Kristy is finding it hard to adjust to her new neighbourood and is a bit annoyed that Charlie and Sam have settled in so quickly.
  • Kristy has a run in with snobby kid, Amanda Delaney, and is not impressed by her.
  • After a sitting job with Amanda, Kristy thinks she's not so bad after all.
  • The family dog Louie gets sick and has to be put down. David Michael in particular takes this badly.
  • The neighbours offer them a puppy, and David Michael bonds with her immediately, he names her Shannon after the neighbour.
  • This builds a good bridge between Kristy and the "snobs" and she makes more effort to settle into her new life and neighbourhood.

Things from other books

  • Nothing stood out as from another particular book, although in the Netflix series Sam invites Stacey over to house, so they are continuing to be quite friendly and in the books they did date for a while.

Things that are changed

  • The 2nd season of the Netflix series is a lot more looser in it's adaption and takes influence from across the series of books as well as doing it's own thing, so there will be a lot more in the changed section.
  • Firstly the Graphix as changes in that are very minor, like some dialogue changes and when Shannon and Kristy are pranking each other there are some different pranks used in the graphix.
  • Some different looks in the graphix Amanda and Hannie (Karen's friends) follow the same design as the spin-off Little Sister Graphix. Shannon is now a brunette with bobbed hair. For some reason of the other changes in appearances in Graphix or Netflix, this is the one that bothered me, Shannon as long blonde curls is stuck in my memory. Maybe say unlike Dawn who is not blonde in Netflix but has the Dawn personality, the Stepford kind of look to Shannon seemed a big part of her.
  • Speaking of Dawn in the original books there is a lot of build up to Jeff wanting to go back to California and this starts in this book, but this chapter is left out of the Graphix.
  • For some babysitting jobs there are additional members in the Graphix. Logan helps out Mary Anne at the Perkins and Jessi helps Claudia and Mallory at the Pikes.
  • On to the Netflix, first big change is Louie has died off-screen before the first episode. A change I am fine with as the book can be hard to read, seeing Loiue get sicker and sicker until they put him down at the end of the book.
  • The other big change is there is no teen Shannon in the series, and therefore no rivalry and prank war.
  • Instead Mrs Delaney's name turns out to be Shannon, and she does come across as snobby at first but it mostly seems to generate conflict between her and Liz rather than Kristy.
  • Other than one sitting job with Amanda, none of the sitting jobs or the Jeff conflict from the book appears.
  • Amanda Delaney, is not so much snobby but bit of a loner, she doesn't have a brother Max, and she ends up connecting with David Michael as they both like animals.
  • Instead of puppy Shannon being bred, she is now a rescue puppy and Mrs Delaney holds a charity event for rescue pups.

Final Thoughts

There is only 1 more graphix that is already published that lines up with a Netflix episode, as there are so many changes to the Netflix series after that, it will probably be easier to talk about comparing them to just the original series! For the Netflix series it is nice to see them return and even though they are being more looser with the book titles, it is still a lot of wholesome fun. The girl that played Dawn had to be recast, so there was fun little nod to that when she says she came back from holidays in California a whole new person. While some have got noticeably older they still have a great dynamic together.
