Stacey's Emergency

 Book #43, Netflix S2 E3

Original Book -  Writer: Ann M.Martin

Netflix Series - Director:  Kimmy Gatewood, Writer: Ryan O'Connell

Basic plot

Stacey has not being feeling well, she thought she had her diabetes under control but she tries to keep it a secret from her family and friends that something is not right until she can no longer hide it.

Things that are kept the same

  • Stacey's blood levels are not where they should be, but she doesn't want to tell anyone, she just wants to be a normal girl.
  • It comes to a point where she can't hide it any more and has to ask for help from a doctor.

Things from other books

  • Nothing stood out to me as specific from other books.

Things that are changed

  • The original book is #43 in the series, the Stacey narrated books that are skipped over, involve Stacey moving back to New York for a time, BSC visiting her there and her parents divorcing and Stacey with her mom moving back to Stoneybrook. I can see why they would skip over that story line, with such short seasons and not wanting to send a main cast member away.
  • The other book skipped over is "Stacey and the Mystery of Stoneybrook" which is about spooky things going on with an old house about to be demolished. Again plot-wise probably not the most compelling, although it it does foreshadow Stacey having health issues with her diabetes.
  • The show follows very little of the plot from the original book. In the book, Stacey's health issues get so bad she ends up in hospital and the doctors have to try various things to get her back to feeling healthy. In the show, she becomes a bit tired and cranky but not so bad she needs to be hospitalised.
  • As the book also takes place after Stacey's parents divorced, it shows that this wasn't an amicable divorce as the McGills struggle to be in same room as each other and use Stacey as a go between.
  • There is a little bit of tension between the McGills after she has her health scare in the show, but it is very brief.
  • In the show, everyone praises Stacey's responsibility and maturity, her doctor nominates her as ambassador for young people with Diabetes, which means she is going to do a cover shoot for a magazine, and make a speech at a gala. She and the BSC are also going to model at the gala to show off diabetic kit bags, that the BSC have vamped up. (Needlessly over complicated event for show)
  • Stacey's levels drop while at the gala and she feels dizzy and unwell. She has to stop in the middle of her speech and ask for her doctor. Her levels are soon brought back to normal.
  • In the book a lot of subplot involves Charlotte Johanssen turning hypochondriac and worrying about Stacey which makes things difficult for her babysitters.
  • In the show  the subplot is Kristy finds out through Dawn (who heard it from her mother) that Elizabeth and Watson are trying for a baby.
  • Kristy thinks her mom didn't tell her because she was nervous of her reaction. To show her support she decides to win a bassinet at the event. After her and Elizabeth talk and she tells Kristy she know that she would be supportive, she didn't tell her because she didn't want to get her hopes up. Elizabeth doesn't know if she can get pregnant.
  • After the Gala, Stacey apologizes to her friends for snapping at them, and learns she doesn't have to be perfect all the time.

Final Thoughts

This is the weakest episode, I'm not very knowledgeable about diabetes, but other people have commented on how inaccurate the blood levels shown to be (like if it is 40 she should have been unconscious not just grumpy). The plot is a bit convoluted, with the gala, I feel they could have  simplified it and made Stacey's "emergency" a bit more dramatic. Whereas in the book, Stacey starts going off her diet, but actually her health issues aren't just because of that, she was feeling unwell before that, it is complications from just having diabetes, which is scary for her. But in the show, the doctor says she can have up and down days but her sickness at gala seems to stem from her skipping a meal. It is a disappointment because I really like Stacey's character and feel the elements were there if they had adjusted some of the plot a bit, it could have been much better.

Claudia and the New Girl

 Book #12, Graphix #9, Netflix S2 E2

Original Book - Writer: Ann M.Martin

Graphix Book - Illustrator: Gabriela Epstein

Netflix Series - Director:  Robert Luketic, Writer: Sascha Rothchild

Basic plot

Books/Graphix:

Claudia gets a new friend the arty Ashley Wyeth. She starts neglecting the BSC so she can concentrate on her art and spend time with Ashley. She realises who her true friends are in the end.

Netflix:

This diverges quite a bit from original book. When Kristy is sick, Claudia is disappointed she isn't first choice to step in as president she decides to prove herself by training up new club member, Mallory. She clashes with Mallory, but after talk with Janine's new cool friend Ashley, she realises she wasn't listening well to Mallory.

Things that are kept the same

  • As the Netflix episode is completely different, the only things that are common across all 3 mediums, is a BSC member missing meetings causes problems, Dawn gets more club responsibility and Claudia is impressed by cool girl Ashley Wyeth.
  • The Graphix follows same plot as original book, Claudia meets new girl the arty Ashley and they bond over art.
  • Claudia misses meetings because she gets caught up in new art project and hanging out with Ashley.
  • Dawn isn't happy to have to take over Claudia's duties all the time, and the whole club is annoyed with Claudia and write some mean notes to leave in her bedroom.
  • Ashley only cares about art and can't understand why Claudia wastes her time on babysitting.
  • Claudia decides to sculpt Jackie Rodowsky for her project.
  • Claudia makes up with the BSC.
  • Because she has to make up for other things she missed she doesn't have time to finish her sculpture but does get an honourable mention at the art show which all the BSC attend.

Things from other books

  • [Netflix only] Mallory's first babysitting job with Claudia supervising doesn't go too well because of nerves (Original Book 14)

Things that are changed

  • The graphix actually switched around the book order so this came before Kristy and the Snobs, but the change doesn't really effect the plot.
  • The Graphix stays pretty close to the book, some events seem to be combined like when Claudia misses meetings, the club's notes are bit less bitchy in the graphix and the ending has everyone coming to a more friendlier understanding with Ashley.
  • The Netflix series, Ashley Wyeth is not even the "new girl" of the title, Mallory is who it refers to.
  • Ashley is introduced as Janine's friend, and she is an influencer that all the BSC in particular Claudia find cool. She isn't art obsessed and is actually quite friendly giving Claudia advice.
  • After the BSC sleepover, Kristy gets strep throat and has to miss meetings and asks Dawn to take over as president, which upsets Claudia as vice-president she thought it would be her job, and thinks her friends don't take her seriously.
  • Unlike the books Dawn is thrilled at the new responsibilities and wants to try out new ideas. She suggests new dues system and donating some of their club fees to charity each month.
  • Mallory and Jessi have now joined (earlier than the original books but they are both in the Graphix at this stage too). Mallory is over enthusiastic, talks a lot and is unsure of her place.
  • Claudia tries to train Mallory but gets really annoyed with her and ends up yelling at her.
  • After talking with Mimi and Ashley, she goes to apologize to Mallory and is more open to listening to her, they talk about collaborating, Mallory's stories with Claudia illustrating.
  • Kristy comes back which everyone is grateful for, as some of Dawn's ways were not working, Kristy does take some of her ideas and modifys them appropriately.

Final Thoughts

This is the last Graphix published for now, there is an adaption of Goodbye, Stacey Goodbye due in February. It's another good adaption, like I said it follows the original closely but I think improved on few subtle things, like Ashley and Claudia leaving things on friendlier terms. As for the Netflix episode this wasn't bad and I like the Claudia actor (Momona Tamada) but I would have preferred if this was just a Mallory episode. Basically nothing comes from the original book, Ashley is very different personality wise, Claudia is disappointed people don't take her seriously (while in the original book she was being more irresponsible) and even Dawn happy in her new role is different. I also found Mallory a little too incompetent, I can't really blame Claudia for losing her cool, Mallory really doesn't seem to be make any attempt at entertaining Lucy while babysitting, which seems to be bigger issue than her talking too much. Someone not as familiar with the books would probably be less nit-picky because it is fun to see Mallory's over-eagerness from an outside viewpoint and Claudia's family dynamics, and it does set up some stuff for later in the series, which from a show runner point of view is more important for making things flow together better. It just would have been nice to see it from Mallory's perspective as she doesn't get an episode herself.

Kristy and the Snobs

 Book #11, Graphix #10, Netflix S2 E1

Original Book - Writer: Ann M.Martin

Graphix Book - Illustrator: Chan Chau

Netflix Series - Director:  Robert Luketic, Writer: Rachel Shukert

Basic plot

Kristy has trouble adjusting to her new rich neighbourhood and she thinks her neighbours are snobs. An additional adjustment is the Thomas's family dog Louie, got sick and had to be put down. Her and David Michael are missing Louie a lot.

Things that are kept the same

  • Kristy is finding it hard to adjust to her new neighbourood and is a bit annoyed that Charlie and Sam have settled in so quickly.
  • Kristy has a run in with snobby kid, Amanda Delaney, and is not impressed by her.
  • After a sitting job with Amanda, Kristy thinks she's not so bad after all.
  • The family dog Louie gets sick and has to be put down. David Michael in particular takes this badly.
  • The neighbours offer them a puppy, and David Michael bonds with her immediately, he names her Shannon after the neighbour.
  • This builds a good bridge between Kristy and the "snobs" and she makes more effort to settle into her new life and neighbourhood.

Things from other books

  • Nothing stood out as from another particular book, although in the Netflix series Sam invites Stacey over to house, so they are continuing to be quite friendly and in the books they did date for a while.

Things that are changed

  • The 2nd season of the Netflix series is a lot more looser in it's adaption and takes influence from across the series of books as well as doing it's own thing, so there will be a lot more in the changed section.
  • Firstly the Graphix as changes in that are very minor, like some dialogue changes and when Shannon and Kristy are pranking each other there are some different pranks used in the graphix.
  • Some different looks in the graphix Amanda and Hannie (Karen's friends) follow the same design as the spin-off Little Sister Graphix. Shannon is now a brunette with bobbed hair. For some reason of the other changes in appearances in Graphix or Netflix, this is the one that bothered me, Shannon as long blonde curls is stuck in my memory. Maybe say unlike Dawn who is not blonde in Netflix but has the Dawn personality, the Stepford kind of look to Shannon seemed a big part of her.
  • Speaking of Dawn in the original books there is a lot of build up to Jeff wanting to go back to California and this starts in this book, but this chapter is left out of the Graphix.
  • For some babysitting jobs there are additional members in the Graphix. Logan helps out Mary Anne at the Perkins and Jessi helps Claudia and Mallory at the Pikes.
  • On to the Netflix, first big change is Louie has died off-screen before the first episode. A change I am fine with as the book can be hard to read, seeing Loiue get sicker and sicker until they put him down at the end of the book.
  • The other big change is there is no teen Shannon in the series, and therefore no rivalry and prank war.
  • Instead Mrs Delaney's name turns out to be Shannon, and she does come across as snobby at first but it mostly seems to generate conflict between her and Liz rather than Kristy.
  • Other than one sitting job with Amanda, none of the sitting jobs or the Jeff conflict from the book appears.
  • Amanda Delaney, is not so much snobby but bit of a loner, she doesn't have a brother Max, and she ends up connecting with David Michael as they both like animals.
  • Instead of puppy Shannon being bred, she is now a rescue puppy and Mrs Delaney holds a charity event for rescue pups.

Final Thoughts

There is only 1 more graphix that is already published that lines up with a Netflix episode, as there are so many changes to the Netflix series after that, it will probably be easier to talk about comparing them to just the original series! For the Netflix series it is nice to see them return and even though they are being more looser with the book titles, it is still a lot of wholesome fun. The girl that played Dawn had to be recast, so there was fun little nod to that when she says she came back from holidays in California a whole new person. While some have got noticeably older they still have a great dynamic together.

Logan Likes Mary Anne!

 Book #10, Graphix #8

Original Book - Writer: Ann M.Martin

Graphix Book - Illustrator: Gale Galligan

Netflix Series - N/A

Basic plot

Mary Anne has a crush on new boy Logan Bruno, meanwhile the BSC have a crisis when advertising goes too well and the end up with more jobs than they can handle. When Logan says he is a babysitter, it gives opportunity for Mary Anne to get to know him and possibly a new member for the club.

Things that are kept the same

This time no Netflix equivalent just a graphic novel.

  • Mary Anne gets a crush on Logan Bruno new boy in school who looks just like her favourite film star Cam Geary.
  • Kristy has an idea to hand out more fliers at a PTA meeting and around her new neighbourhood. Claudia ends up calling an emergency meeting at school after being inundated with calls.
  • Overhearing the conversation, Logan volunteer his services.
  • He comes to his first BSC meeting and ends up getting a trial job with Mary Anne. At the Rodowskys he does a decent job, but then when Mary Anne rings him he says he can't join club. He does ask her to upcoming school dance.
  • While at sitting job with Charlotte, Stacey gets the idea to surprise Mary Anne with a birthday cake at a party.
  • Mary Anne goes shopping for an outfit for the dance and buys a skirt with famous cities.
  • At the dance Mary Anne is having a good time with Logan until her shoe flies off and hits a teacher. She is so embarrassed she sits in the stands for the rest of the evening.
  • Logan continues to show interest in her and they end up talking on the phone a lot and going on a date.
  • At Stacey's back to school party, Mary Anne is surprised everyone is there before her, but soon has a good time with Logan. But then the surprise cake comes out and everyone starts singing happy birthday. Mary Anne hating to be centre of attention runs off.
  • She is upset nobody rings to check on her, but in the meantime she gets courage to ask her dad for a cat and he agrees.
  • She rings Logan and talk they both thought each other were mad. They talk things out and he helps her pick out cat, which she names Tigger.
  • She makes up with the rest of her friends and they have a small party with just them.
  • They come up with idea that Logan can be an associate member of the club, so he does not have to attend meetings but will be able to take up extra jobs when the others can't.

Things from other books

  • [Graphix only] Richard Spier and Sharon Porter have not been dating as much (Original Book 9)
  • [Graphix only] Jessi joins the BSC (Original Book 14)
  • [Graphix only] Jessi talks about being the only person in er family being able to calm her brother Squirt down when he had colic. (Original Book Super Special 11)

Things that are changed

  • More diversity in the book means the Perkins and Logan Bruno are now black.
  • There are some small changes to dialogue throughout the book, like when the girls discuss Cam Geary at the BSC meeting. Also there are some additional conversations, such as Mary Anne making some jokes when babysitting with Logan and when they are at party she talks about why she likes cats.
  • Situations are generally the same but have small changes, usually due to being more visual medium. We see the Perkins playing outside when Dawn goes to Mary Anne's house. When Mary Anne, Claudia and Stacey walk to school together, Mary Anne turns to where Kristy would be, momentarily forgetting she's not there. When Mary Anne and Kristy want to rush to emergency meeting they slow down when the decorum essay teacher from "Kristy's Great Idea" is watching them. Also when Mary Anne's shoe hits teacher she runs to bathroom first before going to sit on the bleachers.
  • There are some completely new scenes, Mary Anne mentions to her Dad, she noticed he hasn't been seeing Sharon as much. This is probably added due to them skipping over book #9 The Ghost at Dawn's House, where we find out Sharon has being seeing other people like the "Trip-man".
  • The biggest addition is Jessi first appears here rather than book #14.
  • Due to Mallory being in the club (and in a different grade) she sneaks out of class to join the BSC during their emergency meeting at lunch. There she mentions new pupil in her class, Jessi that may be able to help. Logan then volunteers his services like in the original book.
  • Both Logan and Jessi attend the next BSC meeting, there is no awkwardness with Logan being the only boy there. (no bra talk at all in the Graphix) The club share funny babysitting stories.
  • After Logan's trial the BSC agree he can be member if he wants (rather than being unsure about inviting boy into club) but Logan turns them down at first. He later explains to Mary Anne, he forgot that he babysitting commitments for his siblings during 2 of the meeting times and he was embarrassed to say in case it looks like he volunteered at first as a ploy to get to know her. In the book he just turned them down because he felt awkward being the only boy there.
  • Jessi has her trial job with Stacey and Charlotte, which mostly goes the same with them deciding to get Mary Anne a surprise birthday cake. An addition is after the job, Jessi talks about feeling bad she had such an easy trial, and about her brother Squirt's colic. (Funnily Jessi's first trial run in the original books was with the Rodowskys, though we didn't get to see her on it, she did do well enough to join club obviously)
  • Two chapters from the book are left out - Claudia babysitting the Perkins and Dawn staying over at Kristy's house.
  • There is a new chapter in the Graphix where Mallory goes to visit Jessi at the hotel they are staying at. In the original books Jessi moves into Stacey's old house when the McGill's move away, so here the Ramsey's are still house hunting. Jessi and Mallory have good talk, while reminiscence of their first meeting and they bond over books, it is a new conversation.
  • At the party before Mary Anne runs off Logan asks if she would be his girlfriend.
  • When the BSC come around to Mary Anne's to have a smaller party, Jessi and Logan are also come. There they officially make Jessi a junior member and tell Logan he doesn't have to attend meetings because of his other commitments but can be an associate member.

Final Thoughts

This may be my favourite Graphix adaption, perhaps because while it does stick closely to original  book there are some new things to make it fresher. I love the art here, so expressive, and feel that combined with some extra conversations make Mary Anne and Logan a super cute couple. In the original books, I was generally indifferent to their relationship, but here they are adorable and I totally ship them. Also bringing in Jessi a little earlier is nice, and we actually see her join the club, in Hello Mallory it ends with just Mal saying she's sure Jessi's trial will go well and she will join.

Timeline

At the end of previous posts I put a timeline of major events that happened in books/tv series. Going forward I am just going to have one timeline post, that I will add to as I go along with this project. Knowing that the Netflix series will be skipping a lot of books and taking things from other books and the Graphix series only has 2 more books scheduled so far, I think it will be better to just have the one post covering it.

Note:  I won't add any Super Specials or Mysteries to timeline unless they are adapted and then they will appear in the original book timeline by their publication date.
