Basic plot
The BSC all go to Summer camp run by Ms Means (known as Meanie). They each have their own subplots/adventures including putting on a show and Stacey ending up in the infirmary due to poison ivy rash.
Things that are kept the same
- The BSC go to Summer Camp, they end up in different cabins.
- They become CITs (Counselors in Training).
- Each babysitter has their own events they are dealing with.
- Stacey ends up in the infirmary after an encounter with poison ivy.
- Mal and Jessi help put on a show.
- A camper goes missing.
- There is homage to the original cover when the BSC take a picture together.
Things from other books
- [Netflix only] Stacey and Laine have a talk and become friends again. (Original Book 3)
- [Netflix only] Laine's father is a broadway producer (Original Book 3)
- [Netflix
only] The play that Mary Anne and Laine put on is called "Paris Magic" it is not a real show but is in the Babysitters Club Books as a show that Stacey and Laine go to see in New York (Original Book 3)
Things that are changed
There is no Graphix adaptation (so far they have not covered any Super Specials). The Netflix series is split over 2 episodes and while the setting is the same and some references to the original book mostly they follow different plots. Because of this I'm going to do this section a bit differently from other posts and give brief description of the girls plots in the book, then the Netflix series.
BSC Summer Vacation:
- Kristy - Her fellow CITs want to give her a makeover, she also has to deal with a homesick camper, Charlotte Johanssen
- Claudia - Falls in love with boy, even though they only have opportunity to meet a couple of times.
- Mary Anne - Tries to prove to her CITs that she is tough by sneaking over to boy side of camp to give Logan a note. She is caught halfway around.
- Stacey - Has a tough time as she ends up getting poison ivy, impetigo, pink eye and mosquito bite and ends up in infirmary.
- Dawn - worries about a quiet bookish camper, Heather, but when her group get lost in the woods, Heather takes charge and leads them back.
- Mallory and Jessi - Are designated Junior-CIT they are teased by their campers (and even some have racist remarks) and they help an 8 year old group put on a show.
Hello, Camp Moosehead!:
- Kristy - Wants to be a CIT and keeps trying to take charge of things, but Meanie keeps telling her she doesn't have responsibilities and needs to just be a camper. When Karen goes missing Kristy with the help of Mal and Jessi, find her and discover she is feeling left out, kids just find her weird and David Michael called her "just a step-sister". Mal & Jessi reassure her that they are friends and Kristy says she is her real sister. Kristy confronts Meanie about Karen wandering off, she stops her from kicking out Dawn and Claudia from camp and convinces her to make the BSC CITs.
- Claudia - Her and Dawn are assigned to the same cabin and realise they have never hung out alone before, they learn more about each other and bond. She runs an unsanctioned art class with Dawn, because they think it's unfair that kids have to pay extra for some activities or miss out if they can't afford it. She gets remanded in her cabin.
- Mary Anne - Directs a play with her cabin mate Laine Cummings, there are stories that the theatre is cursed (mostly spun by Karen). When leading lady has to drop out Mary Anne takes over as lead opposite Logan. They have their first kiss.
- Stacey - She gets the lead in play, but is not happy that her ex-best friend, Laine is at camp and producing the show. They get in fight and end up falling in poison ivy. They both end up in infirmary and have a talk and make up.
- Dawn - She volunteers to be morning announcer, Meanie isn't happy when she tries to bring up socialist issues. After Claudia is remanded in her cabin, because of their art class, Dawn organises a sit-in protest. She clashes with Mary Anne as it disrupts her show, but they come to an understanding.
- Mallory and Jessi - Mallory becomes assistant to Mary Anne for the show and after seeing her dance, Mary Anne and Laine ask Jessi to choreograph the show. When Karen goes missing Mal and Jessi help Kirsty look for her. They impress the girls and are asked to join the BSC.
Other Differences to note:
- This takes place in a different time in the original books, as this is during a
time Stacey has moved back to New York and Mallory and Jessi are already
part of club.
- Camp Mohawk's name is changed to the less offensive Camp Moosehead and Native American references dropped. Also instead of numbered cabins they are now named after birds.
- The Camp CITs have to be 16 in the Netflix series, Meanie only agree to BSC being CITs at the end after Kristy talks to her about Karen going missing and none of the counselors noticing.
- Kristy unofficially gives Mal and Jessi title of Jr CIT at end of episode and invites them to join the BSC as Junior officers.
Final Thoughts
While this is a loose adaptation, the girls subplots (for the most part) seem keeping with the characters. Mary Anne has been building confidence during the series but it did feel a little off that she would be comfortable enough to perform on stage in front of everyone (even if it was a last minute thing). Netflix Karen is really good and did good at showing her outside confidence is sometimes bravado. We haven't seen a lot of Jessi and Mal yet, so I look forward to them getting more to do next season.
Normally I would have a Timeline update at the end of the post, but I'm going to do a separate post instead, that I will update as I go along.
